THE STORY

We've Lived This Shift.

OpShifts started with a simple problem: watching good managers lose hours every week to the hassle of rostering and the endless WhatsApp scramble. Our co-founder Cam works the floor at Jonkershuis, a wine farm restaurant in Cape Town — so this wasn't researched from the outside. It was lived, one exhausting roster at a time. He asked his managers about the system, and got the same disappointing answer every time: rostering is just done this way, and there's nothing better. So we decided to try.

We didn't want to build the tool we personally wished existed and hope everyone else felt the same. We needed something that worked for every kind of venue — restaurants, coffee shops, sushi bars, cloud cafés, all of it. So before we wrote a line of code, we went and knocked on doors — Constantia, Tokai, Steenberg, Hout Bay, Kalk Bay — sitting down with restaurant managers and owners across Cape Town's southern suburbs. We asked them about their systems, their staffing, and every rostering mishap we could learn from. We reached out to 25 venues and sat down with around 15 of them. The story was the same everywhere: spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups, memory, and hope.

That conversation never really stopped. To this day, whenever we walk into a restaurant — for family dinners, a drink with mates, summer smoothies or winter soup — we end up talking to the manager about how their week's going. For us, that's core to OpShifts: understanding what the people using the tool actually need. We're built behind the pass, not in the boardroom. Built by the industry, for the industry. Restaurants have gone through plenty of changes already — online booking, POS upgrades, payroll systems — and OpShifts is the next one. We're not here to replace management or digitise the industry. We're here to give managers their extra hours of sleep, and the time with staff they need.

That's what OpShifts replaces. Not with another app to download, but with the WhatsApp your staff already have open — and a dashboard that actually understands how South African hospitality runs. Our goal is a system that works for managers and staff alike. We don't compromise on simplicity or functionality — they're the whole point.
